Your child’s lunch, books and school equipment can quickly load up a backpack so, with students starting or heading back to school this week, here are a few reminders about how students should be carrying their backpacks.
The Chiropractor’s Association of Australia shared this image and information on their Facebook page this week:
- Backpacks should be ideally no heavier than 10% of a student’s weight when packed.
- Use both shoulder straps
- Use waist straps if provided.
Here is a link to an American TV segment featuring an American chiropractor giving his tips for wearing a backpack properly.
He notes that :
- Wearing both straps balances the wight on both shoulders
- Wearing a backpack too low will mean the child over-compensates by leaning forward to carry the backpack
- Keeping the bag as light as possible is key!
