A recent media release from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW) states that hundreds of people are visiting chiropractors each week with aching backs, tight muscles and neck pain from a cramped drive to work.
“A commute to work shouldn’t make you feel like you’ve just ran a marathon or come off a long haul flight. People in Sydney are spending more time stuck in their cars than the average flight to Brisbane,” the President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW), Dr Joseph Ierano said.
“There are huge health ramifications from sitting in a car for extended periods of time. It can lead to spinal problems, muscle tightening and neck pain, as well as common ailments like tight shoulders and sore arms from holding the steering wheel.”
While traffic delays are often unavoidable in cities, there are some simple measures you can take to avoid spinal stress:
- Negotiate for staggered working hours – working from home is an option or start work a bit earlier or later. Try to be a bit creative in the way you approach commuting hours.
- Look at your car seat and consider lumbar support – there are products that can make your car seat more supportive and comfortable for your spine.
- Keep your spine aligned – balance your seating hours during the day by taking regular breaks to stand and stretch.
- Consider using public transport – people are generally happier as they can relax by reading a book and go through their emails before they reach the office.
